AIR FORCE TO EMBRACE AI: TRANSFORMATIVE TECHNOLOGY TO REVOLUTIONIZE COMMAND AND CONTROL

The US Air Force is joining the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, recognizing the potential benefits it can bring to the Department of Defense. AI has the power to reshape the strategic, operational, and tactical landscape, and the Air Force is determined to establish a competitive lead by 2027, outpacing China’s ambitions to become the global leader by 2030.

One prominent example of AI integration is the Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS), which connects sensors and shooters around the world. It is part of the Joint All Domain Command-and-Control (JADC2) network. Maj. Gen. John M. Olson, Space Force lead for JADC2 and ABMS, highlighted the importance of being responsible, robust, and resilient when using AI and Machine Learning.

However, there is an urgent need for Airmen and Guardians to familiarize themselves with AI technology. Sean Moriarty, CEO of Primer.ai, emphasized the need for training and usage to begin as soon as possible to avoid discussions on the same topics five years from now. Enhancing AI is not enough; education and understanding play a pivotal role in building trust and using the technology effectively.

The Air Force is utilizing AI in various initiatives, such as autonomous drones, precision navigation, and manned-unmanned teaming. These initiatives align with the principles of responsible, robust, and resilient AI, enabling personnel to make more accurate decisions based on accurate information. It is a collaborative effort between humans and machines.

The Pentagon has expressed its commitment to human oversight when it comes to AI technology. Craig Martell, Pentagon AI Chief, made it clear that machines will not be making decisions on their own. The DAF Battle Network, a part of JADC2, encompasses 50 programs that the Air Force is focusing on. Its development of ABMS is crucial in accelerating emerging technologies for the warfighter.

Dr. Lynne Graves, Chief of the AI Division and DAF Chief Digital and AI Office, is excited about the progress of the DAF Battle Network, as it provides a template to leverage future technologies for the warfighter. Building trust in AI based on warfighters’ experience and feedback is essential.

Collaboration is key in the AI revolution. Ian Eishen, director of global public sector for Aalyria Technologies, stressed the importance of collaboration between the military, government, commercial entities, and allies to build a safe collaborative network. This network will support the DAF Battle Network and adapt to changing needs.

The Air Force’s embrace of AI shows its commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements. What are your thoughts on AI in the military? Do you think it will revolutionize command and control? Share your opinions in the comments below!
