AI and machine learning are set to have a significant impact on businesses in the next three years, according to a new survey by Workday. 73% of executives believe that AI will have a major influence on the global business landscape, with over half saying that it will “significantly amplify human potential.” However, many of those surveyed also expressed concerns over siloed and inaccessible data that is hindering the full adoption of AI. Another issue voiced by HR executives is the worry that their staff lack the necessary skills to work with AI. Despite these concerns, 99% of tech leaders in the survey stated that there will be immediate benefits from implementing AI.

A significant percentage (42%) of executives admit that their organizations are unprepared to adopt AI, citing a lack of knowledge, tools, and skills necessary for implementation. Of those questioned, 25% said they plan to wait and see how others deploy AI before doing so themselves. Trust and privacy are also concerns, with almost half of respondents worried about the trustworthiness of AI, and potential errors causing alarm for 74% of those surveyed.Â

Transparency is a key issue facing businesses considering AI adoption. The UK government will be hosting the first AI Safety Summit in November, while the EU is working on the AI Act, set to be the most comprehensive AI legislation globally. Industry efforts are also underway, with eight companies, including IBM and Adobe, signing up to a US government voluntary scheme on model transparency and safety.Â

Another significant concern raised by executives is the presence of siloed and unstructured data within their own companies, hindering their ability to fully utilize AI. Only 4% of respondents claimed their company data was completely accessible. Workday’s VP and UK and Ireland country manager, Daniel Pell, stressed the need for a mindset shift to improve data accessibility in order to fully benefit from AI and machine learning. Despite the worries expressed, CTO of Workday, Jim Stratton, remains optimistic about the potential of AI, asserting that trust and data governance are crucial factors for success.Â
