“Revolutionary Dual Degree Program Pioneers the Future of Healthcare!”

Artificial intelligence (AI) is taking the medical field by storm, and now it’s set to make an even bigger impact with the creation of the first dual degree in medicine in the US. The Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio) and University College at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) have joined forces to launch a five-year MD/MS program that combines medicine and artificial intelligence.

This groundbreaking program will enable physicians trained in San Antonio to use AI to improve diagnostic and treatment outcomes. By earning a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from UT Health San Antonio and a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (MSAI) from UTSA, students will be at the forefront of innovative healthcare. With this unique partnership, advances in therapies and treatments are on the horizon, promising to enhance health and quality of life for all.

The presence of AI is already felt in various areas of the medical field, from customized patient treatment plans to robotic surgeries and drug dosage. UT Health San Antonio and UTSA are actively involved in research programs aimed at improving healthcare diagnostics and treatment through the use of AI. The World Economic Forum predicts that AI will not only reduce wait times and improve efficiency in hospitals but also analyze information from multiple sources to predict patient care.

The UTSA M.S. in Artificial Intelligence offers a multidisciplinary degree program with three tracks: data analytics, computer science, and intelligent and autonomous systems. This program provides students with the opportunity to conduct research alongside esteemed professors in MATRIX: The UTSA AI Consortium for Human Well-being, an environment dedicated to developing sustainable AI solutions that benefit society.

The pilot program was introduced in 2021 to UT Health San Antonio medical students, and two students who applied and were accepted into the MD/MS program for fall 2023 are expected to graduate in spring 2024. With their combined degrees, these students will have endless possibilities in the healthcare field.

As medical student Aaron Fanous explains, the future of healthcare requires physicians who can navigate both the technical and clinical sides of medicine. The dual degree program has opened his mind to the potential of bridging these two fields, allowing him to contribute to solutions for tomorrow’s medical challenges. Similarly, Eri Osta, another medical student, sees the dual degree as an opportunity to align patients’ medical needs with technology’s potential, shaping a more efficient future for healthcare.

Medical students accepted into the dual degree program will be required to take a leave of absence from their medical education to complete two semesters of AI coursework at UTSA. They will complete a total of 30 credit hours, including core courses, concentration courses, and a capstone project.

Exciting times lie ahead for the intersection of medicine and artificial intelligence. This dual degree program is just the beginning of the transformation happening in the healthcare industry.
