Tencent, China’s largest company, has declared “war” in the race to become the country’s national artificial intelligence (AI) champion. The company has introduced “Hunyuan”, a large language model (LLM) similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Tencent is focusing on the enterprise market and has already integrated Hunyuan into more than 50 of its products. It offers services such as generating automated meeting notes, image creation, copywriting, and customer service. Tencent’s decision to enter the AI space comes as other tech groups in China, including Baidu and ByteDance, have already released their AI products to the public. Tencent claims that Hunyuan is better than OpenAI’s GPT-4 LLM when it comes to answering questions in Chinese about science and maths. Despite the challenges of monetizing AI models, investors remain optimistic, as shown by the 20% increase in Baidu’s shares following the release of its Ernie Bot ChatGPT-like service.
