eSafety Commission Takes Action Against AI-generated Child Sexual Abuse Material
In a bold move by Australia’s eSafety Commission, search engines will now be mandated to remove AI-generated child sexual abuse material from their search results. The Commission’s CEO, Julie Inman Grant, announced this new measure as a response to the increasing threat to children’s privacy and rights posed by AI and deepfakes.
The online safety codes and standards will specifically target the risks associated with generative AI integration and cover multiple sections of the online industry. Participants in the industry will be required to take appropriate measures to address the risk of class 1 material, including child sexual abuse material, on their services within Australia. Additionally, the new requirements prohibit the use of AI functionality to create synthetic versions of such material.
In a statement, Inman Grant emphasized the urgency of this action, stating that the existing code was no longer sufficient when major players in the industry announced their integration of generative AI. She acknowledged the need for stronger community protections and the inability of the previous code to meet those expectations.
The upcoming online safety code will be drafted in accordance with the Online Safety Act 2021 (Cth). This Act serves as the primary source of law in Australia for regulating illegal and restricted online content and grants the eSafety Commissioner significant new powers to protect Australians from harm.
Currently, the registered industry codes are applicable to five sectors, including social media services, internet carriage services, app distribution services, hosting services, and equipment providers. However, the new industry standards will extend their focus to two additional sectors, namely designated internet service and relevant electronic services.
The eSafety Commission’s actions represent a crucial step towards safeguarding children from the dangers posed by AI-generated child sexual abuse material. By mandating search engines to remove such content from their results, Australia is demonstrating its commitment to protecting the privacy and rights of its citizens, especially the most vulnerable members of society.
