H2: Shocking Rise in Deepfake Pornography Videos Found Online
An analysis has uncovered a disturbing trend in the world of deepfake videos – the vast majority of them are pornography. A report has revealed a staggering 550% increase in the number of deepfake videos found online this year compared to 2019, with deepfake pornography making up a whopping 98% of all deepfake content.
Victims of deepfake pornography have spoken out about the devastating impact it can have on their lives. One victim described it as “a lifelong sentence”. Deepfake content is created using generative artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, which can produce hyper-realistic content. Bad actors can use this technology to target victims, engage in blackmail, or even manipulate others for criminal or political purposes.
The report, conducted by analysts at a website called homesecurityheroes.com, studied over 95,000 deepfake videos, 85 online channels, and more than 100 websites connected to the deepfake ecosystem. One of the most alarming findings is that it now takes less than 25 minutes to create a minute-long deepfake pornographic video using just a single clear image of the victim’s face.
Furthermore, the report highlights that South Korea is the epicenter of the deepfake porn epidemic. The country has the highest number of victims, which the analysts attribute to the global popularity of K-pop. The report states that three out of the four members of the famous girl group Blackpink are among the top 10 most targeted individuals. The high visibility and demand for content featuring K-pop idols contribute to the creation and distribution of deepfake pornography involving them.
The prevalence of deepfake pornography is spreading rapidly across the internet. Seven of the top ten most visited pornographic websites host deepfake content, with more than 303 million video views across the top ten dedicated deepfake pornography websites. The analysts call for a conversation regarding attitudes towards this content, emphasizing the ethical considerations of its creation.
The rise in deepfake content can be attributed to the emergence of generative artificial intelligence technology, specifically generative adversarial networks (GANs), which provide the technical means for creating deepfake content. Additionally, the accessibility of tools built on GANs has made it incredibly easy and affordable for almost anyone to create deepfakes.
