In a bold statement, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna has assured his programmers that they won’t be losing their jobs to artificial intelligence (AI). In fact, he believes they will become 30% more productive because of it.
During Fortune’s CEO Initiative conference, Krishna stated, “I don’t intend to get rid of a single one. I’ll get more.” He even expressed plans to increase the number of software engineering and sales roles in the next few years.
While admitting that AI could automate repetitive white-collar jobs, Krishna emphasized that it would not completely replace anyone’s position. In fact, he argues that more jobs have been created because of AI, with an increase of 8,000 compared to a decrease of only 800.
Krishna’s comments come at a time when fears of job loss due to AI are on the rise. A May report by Pollfish found that around 80% of US workers surveyed were concerned about pay cuts resulting from AI adoption. Moreover, Goldman Sachs predicted that over 300 million jobs worldwide could be disrupted by AI.
However, Krishna is not alone in his optimism. Other tech leaders, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, believe that AI will boost productivity rather than destroy jobs.
Studies have supported this view, highlighting that AI primarily impacts less skilled workers. For example, a study revealed that customer service representatives experienced a 35% productivity boost with AI tools, while higher-skilled workers saw little to no improvement.
