Incredible report reveals the secret to taming the AI skill threat!

Developers fear being left behind in the age of AI-assisted coding, but a new report suggests that a culture of learning and development could help alleviate these concerns. According to the report by Pluralsight, 45% of developers surveyed showed signs of anxiety about their skills becoming obsolete due to AI. However, while 75% of developers plan to upskill in AI, female and LGBTQ+ developers are less likely to do so. On the other hand, racial minority developers have a higher intent to upskill, but also hold a more negative perception of AI compared to their peers.

The report also highlights the impact of company culture on developers. Software teams with a “high contest culture,” where employees must constantly prove their worth through competition, tend to have a higher incidence of skill threat. In contrast, a culture of learning and belonging can help build resilience and motivate workers. Developers who feel like they belong and have the space to learn are generally more productive.

Cat Hicks, VP of Research Insights at Pluralsight, emphasized the importance of prioritizing a human-first approach in the adoption and implementation of AI-assisted coding. Worker confidence in AI has been growing, with respondents in a Robert Half survey praising AI for its ability to streamline tasks and increase productivity. However, the report from TalentLMS cautions that “human” skills like problem-solving, creativity, and lifelong learning remain crucial in most occupations, and must be prioritized alongside AI training.

So, while the rise of AI in software development may present challenges, the solution lies in fostering a culture of learning and development. With the right support and opportunities, developers can stay ahead of the game and embrace the opportunities AI has to offer.
