PRAS MICHEL’S LAWYERS CALL FOR A RETRIAL, ACCUSE EX-LAWYER OF BOTCHING THE CASE WITH EXPERIMENTAL AI
Former Fugees rapper Pras Michel is seeking a new trial after his lawyers accused his ex-attorney of using experimental AI to craft his defense argument. Michel was convicted in April of federal charges relating to conspiracy and fraud. Now, his new legal team claims that his former lawyer, David Kenner, mishandled the case by using a generative AI program to draft closing arguments.
In a court filing, Michel’s lawyers alleged that Kenner used a program called EyeLevel.AI, which resulted in “ignoring the best arguments and conflating the charged schemes.” They also accused Kenner and his co-counsel of having a financial stake in EyeLevel.AI, claiming that they used the program for Michel’s defense in order to issue a press release.
The lawyers further criticized Kenner’s defense strategy, stating that he lacked expertise in white-collar crime and outsourced trial preparations to contract attorneys. Michel’s legal team outlined six issues in his defense, including a failure to object to hearsay or prejudicial evidence. They argue that Michel’s legal defense was “deficient throughout” and that he never stood a chance.
Kenner and the ArentFox Schiff team, Michel’s new legal representation, have not yet responded to requests for comment. Michel’s sentencing date has not been set, but he faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
