Zelda Williams, daughter of the late Robin Williams, has spoken out against the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to recreate her father’s voice. In an Instagram Story, she expressed her concerns about the use of AI to generate the voice of actors who cannot consent. She reveals that she has already heard AI models being used to make her father’s voice say whatever people want, which she finds personally disturbing.
Zelda’s comments come in the midst of the Writer Guild of America’s strike over several issues, including the use of AI. While the strike has reached a tentative agreement, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) is still on strike over the use of AI and other matters.
According to Zelda, living actors should have the opportunity to create characters and put their own human effort and time into their performances. She believes that AI recreations are at best poor imitations of real people, but at worst, they are monstrous creations that go against everything the industry should stand for.
Robin Williams passed away in 2014 at the age of 62. He had previously been diagnosed with anxiety, severe depression, Parkinson’s disease, and Lewy Body Dementia. Despite his death, his voice will be used in a new Disney short called Once Upon a Studio, in which he reprises his role as Genie from Aladdin. The short features previously unheard dialogue recorded by Williams before his passing, with the consent of his estate.
What are your thoughts on the use of AI to recreate the voices of deceased actors? Do you agree with Zelda Williams’ concerns, or do you see it as a way to preserve their legacies? Leave a comment below and let us know!
