Is Artificial Intelligence (AI) really as impressive as it claims to be? Well, according to recent headlines, AI is either going to lead us to a perfect world or drive us to extinction. Talk about extremes! But let’s dig a little deeper.
The current obsession with AI is resulting in some outlandish claims. On one hand, we have experts saying that AI will solve all our problems and make us all rich. On the other hand, we have warnings about the dangers of AI-generated products.
So what exactly is AI? It’s essentially trying to imitate human intelligence, but without any real understanding of what intelligence truly means. Instead, it’s all about measuring and quantifying everything, without actually comprehending the meaning behind the data.
The goal of AI is what’s called “artificial general intelligence” (AGI), which basically means creating an intelligent entity that can do everything. But here’s the problem: we can’t even build a machine that can decide if a mathematical proof is right or wrong, let alone create something that can do everything intelligently.
And even if partial AI applications are possible, there are still concerns. These applications consume an enormous amount of energy, far more than any living being would need to survive. So while AI may be able to win a game of chess, it’s not exactly sustainable.
So, is AI really as intelligent as it claims to be? Not quite. It’s more about processing large amounts of data than true intelligence. And while there may be some impressive achievements, they don’t qualify as intelligence.
What we really need is an AI that can achieve its goals using the same amount of energy and data as a living being would. That would be truly impressive.
