NEW HOLLYWOOD DEAL MEANS STARS ARE SAFE FROM AI (WELL, SORT OF…)
Hollywood stars just struck a deal with the studios that protects them from the AI revolution. From AI zombies to CGI extras, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) has put in rigorous guardrails for studios when it comes to using artificial intelligence on set.
PAY RAISES AND MORE MONEY FOR ACTORS
The new deal will mean a seven percent pay increase for actors and a significant financial boost from a new $40-million-per-year fund. The deal also puts strict curbs and protections in place for actors against the use of artificial intelligence.
RULES TO PROTECT ACTORS IN THE AGE OF AI
According to SAG-AFTRA negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the deal protects actors and guards their rights to consent, fair compensation, and employment. Actors must now be paid the same rate for any use of their digital replica, and strict measures have been put in place to ensure that AI will not be used to dodge payments to actors or for any sneaky cost-cutting measures.
AI PROTECTIONS COULD ALSO MEAN JOB PROTECTIONS
SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher said it’s important to have these kinds of rules in place, not just for actors, but for all other workers involved in productions. The protections against using AI to create synthetic performers or “zombies” will also protect hair and makeup artists, drivers, set builders, and others in the entertainment industry.

But the fight isn’t over. Both union leaders are encouraging politicians to get on board and make AI protections a legislative priority.
