Find Out How AI Transformed Cambridge Dictionary’s Word of the Year!

CAMBRIDGE DICTIONARY ANNOUNCES ‘HALLUCINATE’ IS WORD OF THE YEAR – FOR AI!

Move over, ordinary hallucinations – the 2023 Word of the Year is all about artificial intelligence! Cambridge Dictionary has declared “hallucinate” as the word of the year, but with a twist. Forget thinking it’s just about seeing things that aren’t there. This new definition refers to AI technology producing false information. What a new world we’re living in!

AI SEES A SURGE IN INTEREST

This year has seen a surge in interest in AI tools with accessible chatbots, such as ChatGPT, even being used by a British judge to write part of a court ruling. And believe it or not, authors are using it to help write their novels! But, beware – it doesn’t always deliver reliable and fact-checked prose. AI confabulations (aka hallucinations) can range from suggestions that seem plausible to completely nonsensical ones!

BELIEVE IT OR NOT

Wendalyn Nichols, Cambridge Dictionary’s publishing manager, reminds us humans still have to bring their critical thinking skills to the invasive use of these tools. As she says, the more original you ask AI to be, the more likely it is to go astray. Even Google’s AI chatbot Bard made a factual error recently!

READY TO ASPIRE HUMAN-LIKE ATTRIBUTES TO AI

AI is getting real! Dr Henry Shevlin, an AI ethicist at Cambridge University, noted that the term “hallucinate” reflects a profound shift in perception. And get this – he predicts that our psychological vocabulary will soon be extending to encompass the strange abilities of the new intelligences we’re creating.
