FEI-FEI LI: THE SCIENCE OF AI AND VISION
Fei-Fei Li, a pioneering computer scientist, has made her mark on artificial intelligence. From her humble beginnings as a physics enthusiast, where she pondered the boundaries of the universe, she merged onto a path to become the vocal advocate for “human-centered” and ethical AI. Her newly released memoir, The Worlds I See: Curiosity, Exploration, and Discovery at the Dawn of AI, tells her story and unwraps the mystery around the development and future of AI.
FROM THE COSMOS TO VISION
From early in Li’s career, she was struck by the wondrous connection between human intelligence and machine intelligence. Her fascination with the human visual system and her later discovery of computer vision, inspired her to explore how the human visual system is married to computer technology. It’s like, hello self-driving cars!
THE ENIGMA OF MACHINE INTELLIGENCE
Even with all the advancements in AI, Li says there’s still much we don’t know about how AI learns. She even wonders aloud why AI can engage in human-like conversation but can’t calculate 2+2. And what about all these problems with bias? She says that scientist and society at large must work together to regulate and responsibly govern AI to keep the technology from going rogue.
FEI-F EATURED FOR HUMAN-CENTERED AI
In her book, Li puts her brain’s processing power to use and shares her thoughts on why AI should be centered around YOU: Recruitment by an AI, for an AI. She says AI should focus on enhancing rather than replacing human labor and we should have a mix of scientists and non-scientists in all AI conversations.
Fei-Fei Li’s got science in her veins, and her memoir “The Worlds I See: Curiosity, Exploration, and Discovery at the Dawn of AI’ is out now. Do you think we should be terrified of AI? Or just because it can’t do math doesn’t mean it’s not smart? Let me know YOUR thoughts in the comments below!
