Revolutionary French AI Lab with $330M Budget to Go Open Source!

MILLIONAIRES UNITE TO FUND AI RESEARCH LAB

Today at Scaleway’s ai-PULSE conference, French billionaire and Iliad CEO Xavier Niel announced the launch of Kyutai, a new lab in Paris focused on artificial general intelligence. This nonprofit lab is armed with a hefty budget of over €300 million thanks to generous contributors such as Rodolphe Saadé and others.

The lab will work on foundational models and has already acquired a thousand Nvidia H100 GPUs for model training. It has also recruited top AI researchers from companies like Meta and Google to lead the team.

But Kyutai isn’t stopping there. It’s open to more donations and is keen to attract additional investors. What’s more, they’re not just about building models. They’re committed to open science and making their work transparent for everyone to see.

A FRENCH ASSET

French President Emmanuel Macron supports this initiative, emphasizing the importance of turning open-source into a French asset. Macron also used the opportunity to defend France’s position on Europe’s AI Act, which focuses on regulating use cases rather than model makers.

Niel has echoed this sentiment, pointing out that Europe is lagging behind when it comes to AI innovation. He believes that excessive regulation could hinder the growth and success of European AI companies.

So, what do you think? Do you agree with Macron and Niel’s position on AI regulation? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
