Vanderbilt and Duke teams up to revolutionize AI in healthcare!

HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATIONS GRANTED FUNDING BY MOORE FOUNDATION FOR AI PROJECT

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) has been awarded a $1.25 million grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for the project “Measuring Artificial Intelligence (AI) Maturity in Healthcare Organizations.” This grant will allow a team of experts to develop an AI maturity model framework, outlining the essential capabilities that health systems need to ensure the trustworthy use of AI models.

The promise of AI for improving health care is great, but there is a current wide gap between its promise and reality. Health systems are actively developing and employing algorithmic technologies without the necessary oversight, resources, and organizational infrastructure to monitor and ensure their safety, fairness, and quality. The gap hinders the safety, efficacy, and accountability of patient care using AI technologies.

The team, led by VUMC and Duke University School of Medicine, has a long tradition of scholarship on technology and organizations. They are excited to work with their partners at the Coalition for Health AI and the Moore Foundation to build an empirically supported maturity model for healthcare AI. Over the next year, health care teams will engage stakeholders to outline the components health systems need to implement AI solutions.

Creating a maturity model framework for health AI will enable health systems to identify their strengths and weaknesses when procuring and deploying AI solutions, ultimately driving the transformation of health care for the better.
