Tech world predicts arrival of human-level AI ‘in the near future’
Some of the world’s leading artificial intelligence labs are predicting a form of AI that will equal or exceed human intelligence to come into existence within the near future. However, how this AI will look and how it will be applied remains a mystery. From major tech companies to leading AI labs, leaders are weighing the opportunities and risks presented by what is referred to as AGI, artificial general intelligence. This form of AI can complete a task at the same level as any human or even beat humans at any task ranging from chess to complex mathematical puzzles. Despite being referred to as the “holy grail” of AI due to its potential power, fears and concerns remain due to the lack of transparency and explainability of AI systems, job losses from increased automation, data privacy, and surveillance.
OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman, once fearful of the threats of advanced AI, is changing his tune following the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. He claims that advanced AI isn’t the world-reshaping force that many fear. AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton has warned that advanced programs could escape control by writing their own computer code to modify themselves. The question remains, just how close are we to AGI and how can we ensure its responsible and safe development? While uncertainty exists, we know that the tech world is diligently weighing the risks to avoid a ‘s— show.”
