The founders, Ruth Sparkes and Sunita Gordon, were inspired to develop the ‘SaferSpace’ app after grim statistics revealed that 79% of victims don’t report incidents of harassment in the workplace. The app is designed for use by companies and universities looking to create safer environments.
This crucial tool stands out because it supports anonymity and is trained on UK legislation so that users can ask the right questions before filing a complaint. This way, it offers more support to victims while not overburdening HR departments. An added bonus is that the app helps organizations pinpoint patterns and develop interventions for the future.
The new tool’s origins were here in the UK, an amazing response to shocking statistics of sexual harassment including at McDonald’s, the Red Arrows, and the Ministry of Defence. Even better, this tool could be our first step towards a MeToo group action in the UK! Let’s face it; the fast food industry has dated itself and is long overdue for an upgrade. With 75% of its employees between 16 and 25, we should be doing our best to create safe and supportive spaces within our society.
