AI-GENERATED DISINFORMATION ON THE RISE
Artificial intelligence may be taking over the world, and not in a good way. With the 2024 presidential election looming, the fear of AI-generated disinformation has officially become a reality. The New Hampshire Department of Justice reported that voters received a fake audio of Joe Biden, telling them not to vote in the state primary election. The call was complete with a voice that sounded eerily like Biden’s and a false message telling people their vote in November was more important than in the state primary election. Yikes!
THE DEEPFAKES ARE COMING!
The source of the fake audio was none other than ElevenLabs, an AI voice generator specializing in lending human-like inflection to a voice based on the context. Pindrop Security Inc. found the shocking truth that the Biden robocall was made using ElevenLabs’ technology. Once ElevenLabs caught wind of this misuse of their creation, they immediately suspended the responsible account.
VIGILANCE IS KEY
Computer science professor Kathleen Carley predicts that this is only the beginning in the attempts to suppress voters. The well-known tech giant OpenAI is making moves to protect the integrity of the election and has already suspended a developer who created a bot for a long-shot democratic candidate. The internet may be about to get a lot scarier, as AI-generated content is becoming more prominent as the days go by.
