In a groundbreaking move, Dr. Dongxiao Zhu and his team at Wayne State University School of Computer Science are shaking up the way Detroiters get around the city. Thanks to a Civic Innovation Challenge Award, funded by the National Science Foundation and Department of Energy, they are developing an AI tool that could change the game for public transit in Detroit.
With the ultimate goal of improving public transit operations and options, the team is utilizing foot traffic data to pinpoint areas of highest bus rider needs, as well as aerial images to map out sidewalks for easier navigation post-bus ride. In addition, they are looking into potential user-generated data from an app that will be part of the AI prototype.
The Detroit Department of Transportation is keeping mum on the potential impact of AI tools on mobility in Detroit for now. But one thing is for sure – this AI for Mobility Project has the potential to transform the way Detroiters travel around the city.
