FEDERAL AGENCIES FAILED TO IMPLEMENT MOST OF THEIR AI USE CASES – REPORT FINDS
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has revealed shocking news, federal agencies have only implemented a fraction of their ideas for Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. They discovered that 20 nondefense agencies have a staggering 1,200 AI use cases, but only 16% have been put to good use while the rest remain in the planning phase.

NASA took the lead with the biggest collection of AI use cases, followed by the Commerce Department. However, the audit does not include AI use cases from the Defense Department. FOUNDATIONAL STEPS TAKEN BY AGENCIES TO PROMOTE AI IN GOVERNMENT
The report also highlights some steps agencies have accomplished to enhance the use of AI in government. One example is the General Services Administration’s establishment of the AI Center of Excellence. The National Institute of Standards and Technology also released its AI Risk Framework, offering a set of guidelines for the responsible use of AI.

While competing legislative priorities delay OPM in creating a new occupational series or updating an existing series for AI employees, agencies continue to struggle in identifying requirements for AI positions. The Biden administration is laser-focused on a “governmentwide AI talent surge,” but federal agencies are facing difficulties due to underdeveloped systems.
