ATTORNEY GENERAL NAMES DOJ’S FIRST AI OFFICER
The Department of Justice has taken a major leap into the future of technology with the appointment of Jonathan Mayer as its first chief science and technology advisor and chief artificial intelligence officer.
Mayer, a computer science and law expert, will advise the attorney general and lead efforts to bolster the department’s technological capabilities by recruiting top talent in the field, ensuring that the department is well-equipped to handle the challenges that come with emerging technologies.
Not only is Mayer tasked with the important role of chief science and technology advisor, but he has also been designated as the chief AI officer, in alignment with President Joe Biden’s executive order on AI.
For Mayer, this means driving intra-departmental and cross-agency initiatives on AI and related issues, as well as heading the newly established Emerging Technology Board, which oversees and governs the use of AI and other emerging technologies within the Justice Department.
With AI playing an increasingly larger role in our daily lives, the department’s move to stay ahead of the curve in navigating this ever-evolving landscape is crucial. President Biden himself acknowledges that governing AI technology is a necessity in order to realize its promise and avoid the risks associated with its use.
What do you think about the Department of Justice’s latest move into the world of AI? How do you think emerging technologies will continue to shape our world in the future? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
